Chapter 20

Mercy

“Imissed his heart!” I cried after we plummeted to Joel’s family room floor, jumping to my feet and pacing across the room. “Shit!”

Joel ran into the room, looking panicked. “What the hell happened, Mercy? Are you two okay at least?”

“I missed. That’s what happened. I had Maurice and Julian in the same room, along with this psychopath female witch, and I missed his heart!”

I placed my hands on my head, gripping my hair. “We leave tomorrow for Canada. We can’t do anything without Dante’s help to bring the coven back. It’s not safe for us here anymore.”

Joel nodded. “Dorian, call Noah and make sure he doesn’t return to the house. I’ll head to the market to grab what you guys need for your trip and put a protective spell over the house. No one leaves here until you’re going through a portal and out of the country.”

I felt Dorian’s hands catch me and cover my arms, stroking my skin until I relaxed.

I turned around and placed my hand on his cheek. “I need to take a shower. All I feel are Maurice’s hands all over me.”

Dorian frowned and backed up, slightly lowering his head. I knew this was torturing him to no end, because he wanted to rip Maurice’s head off just as much as I did. That damn purple smoke, which had to have been wolfsbane, rendered him helpless. Dorian was unable to help me, and that would eat him up inside.

“I’ll call Noah and then pour us a glass of wine,” Dorian said.

I gave him a weak smile. “Thank you.”

I heard Joel’s keys rattle in the kitchen. “Mercy, once I head out the door, the shield will go up around the house. Call me if you guys need anything.”

“I will, Joel,” I said. “Promise you’ll be extra careful out there. He’s coming after everyone.”

I turned back to Dorian and stepped toward him, reaching out my hand and pulling him to me slowly. I wanted to comfort him, reassure him, but I was at a loss for words. I kissed his cheek gently, removed my hand, and padded to the guest bathroom.

The water hit my skin hotter than usual, and I let it burn my backside. I inhaled the steam around me, letting the warmth flood my lungs. I squeezed the soap in the luffa and scrubbed my skin until it felt raw. Then I rinsed off the dried blood from my face, feeling my lip and nose. Not that it mattered since I had healed the physical wounds of the attack. Getting Maurice out of my head was another injury altogether. How did this happen?

Why do I keep failing and letting him beat me over and over again?

Time slowed down for a moment, and I plugged my foot over the drain, letting the water build up in the tub, and sank into the hot bath. I closed my eyes and spoke to my powers, reaching out to the elements. I called on the water, which grew hotter than it had been when it came from the showerhead.
